Birthday Party ideas

Posted On: June 23rd, 2011

Since 2005, when Pirate & Princess Parties was born, there have been trends that have come and gone in the kids birthday party business, but there are definitely some things that don’t change. As a mom, I thought I had it all figured out, but after doing hundreds of birthday parties in Utah for many different children, there are things I’ve learned about what makes for a successful birthday party. We are starting this blog to share ideas you can use to host a successful birthday party for your child.
Many parents are afraid of the kids. It can be intimidating to have 14 kids running through your living room blowing their loud favors with frosting on their hands and faces. This is when you remember that after 2 hours (or less if you are smart), it will all be over and their parents will be back to collect them. You can do anything for two hours… right?
Parents always want to live up to their kids expectations or hopes of what their birthday party will be like. Maybe they hired Pony Palace last year so how can they top that? Or you know how much it would thrill their child to see their favorite princess walk through the door, so you try to give them some magic while they still believe.
Some parents feel like their child’s birthday party is a neighborhood competition. If they decorate, cater, buy the water slide, bouncy pirate ship and send home pricey party favors, they’ll beat the Jones’. Surely, they’ll get the admiration of all the mom’s on the block if they bring in “Dora” to sing “Feliz Cumpleanos”.
Most parents just want to make their child feel special and give them a memorable party that they will really enjoy. Parents want birthday party ideas that are creative as well as simple to carry out. We’ll share mistakes we’ve made so you don’t have to, as well as tips that make any birthday party better.
The most important things to remember is to focus on what the birthday child really likes. Whether the mom is running the party or a hired party host, this is rule #1 at a birthday party. When deciding on a theme, think about what the child really loves. If he is a chocolate lover, make it a chocolate party. If she loves makeup and nail polish, consider a glamour day spa celebration. This might seem obvious, but occasionally, moms pick a princess party for their tom-boy and feel disappointed when she doesn’t care to participate. Consider your child’s true interests and their tolerance for social situations. Maybe your child would enjoy a movie with two close friends instead of a marathon-sleepover with 15. There are choices you can make that will make the whole experience easier on you AND more enjoyable for the birthday child.
